‘Pike’s’ Sail

Today has been very busy. Besides working on the patio I had a very pleasant hour-and-a-half with Paul Mullings who paid me a visit. He gave me a hand setting up ‘Pike’s’ rig. We tried the sail with and without the boom. My preference is without the boom, because I can brail up the sail without having to remove the boom. As far as I can see, the only advantage of the boom is when running, because it can keep the sail flat, thereby exposing it to more wind.

Dabblers Sails blog has an article about sprit booms and one about braiding sprit sails. Might be useful http://www.dabblersails.com/blog/blog.pl
