Looking Forward to the Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta

In the account* of Lot’s escape from depraved Sodom, along with his wife and two daughters, one of the two escorting angels spoke to them saying, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.”  The LORD was about to bring judgement upon the city by raining brimstone and fire upon it. Lot’s wife disobeyed the angel’s instruction and paid for it with her life. She was turned into a pillar of salt.

The story is a salutary lesson for us not to hanker after the past, but be grateful for God’s mercies and look to the future.

In my 80th year I’m looking to the future, and I’m grateful for all of God’s mercies. I must listen to Him and be obedient to His word. That does not mean I am to deprive myself of innocent pleasures; therefore I can look forward to things and events that will give me pleasure. Jesus came to give us life to the full, a life of abundance; (John 10:10) not to be miserable and ungrateful. Our greatest fullness will be in the next life, where ultimately there will be no ocean, and yet there will be a ‘pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.’ (Revelation 22:1)

A possible future pleasure for me, DV, will be seeing something of The Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta at Greenwich between 5th and 9th September, 2014. These fine vessels will first assemble at Falmouth for shore-side activities between 28th to 31st August. From there they will race to the Isle of Wight; then they will cruise in company to Greenwich for five days of festivities.

*Genesis 19:12-26
