The weather was almost perfect for varnishing the exterior
wooden parts of ‘Sandpiper’. In a little over an hour the job was done. The
only thing that will require a third coat is the rudder stock. On parts of it I
took back the old varnish to the bare wood, and I think four coats will be the minimum
for them, especially the lower edges that come into contact with the water when
the boat is afloat. The sliding hatch, handrails and washboards are all good
for the remainder of the season, and into the next.
