Here we are back home from Malta. Me and my Other Half had an
interesting and enjoyable ten day break on the Island based at a hotel
overlooking Sliema waterfront. For anyone who enjoys looking at architecture, studying
archaeology, dining and drinking, Malta is hard to beat. If you want sandy beaches
and beautiful scenery you will be hard-pressed to find them. Golden Bay in the North
West is, in my opinion, by far the best beach, and that area is the most
picturesque. Much of the Island has been built upon. Nearby Gozo is greener and
less densely populated per square mile. Our tour guide told us that there are
nine women to every man on Gozo because the majority of the men born there seek
work elsewhere; so if you are searching for a wife, it’s a great place to be!
Buses are the main means of getting about, both on Malta and
Gozo, but you will need a healthy body
and a stout heart, because bus drivers take great delight in going as
fast as they can, especially over the bumpiest sections of roads, which in
general could do with better maintenance. In all fairness some new road
building has been done to alleviate the problem.
St. John’s Cathedral should have been the highlight of our
visit, but like similar places where tourists want to sample what’s on offer,
the clamour brought about by them destroys the very thing they come to see and
experience. The building is vast, and the incredible decorations adorning the
interior overpowered me. I’m sure I shall be amazed at the photographs I took
of the Cathedral and many other places. In due course I shall share them with
readers of this Blog.
