Westerly 22 Yacht

Westerly 22s were built between 1963 and 1967 at Westerly Marine Construction Ltd, formerly Beacon’s Boat Co., founded by Commander Denys Rayner. These four berth GRP triple keel sailing cruisers were designed by him. They were developed from his 21’ plywood West Coaster of which about 60 were built. Early Westerly 22s were rigged as Gunter sloops, but by popular demand, later ones were mostly Bermudan.

In 1966 Westerly Marine came up with a larger upper moulding for the 22 and renamed her Westerly Nomad*.  Instead of being open plan, a bulkhead was added to create two cabins. Evinrude outboard engines were the preferred auxiliary, but new owners had the option of having an internal engine.

Sail Insignias for Identifying Classes of Yachts and Dinghies

One way of identifying the class or make of a sailing yacht or dinghy is to observe the sail insignia which may give glues as to which type she is. I was recently asked by Tony Lawlor if I could identify the make of his trailer sailer. At first I struggled, and I couldn’t find an identical yacht featured on the Internet. I started my research by looking at similar vessels, with a view to discovering who had designed them, in the hope they may also have designed Tony’s yacht.

That proved unfruitful. Then I came up with the brilliant idea of looking up sail insignias. His had a crown over the letters ‘SK’, but again, I drew a blank. I remembered seeing a photo on the Internet of a similar vessel, and somewhere in the back of my mind I knew what she was. Annoyingly I could not recall it, and I had to admit I did not know what class of boat she was. Only an hour of so later I casually looked at boats for auction on Ebay, and there was a similar boat listed as a ‘Seasafe’. A little bit of Googling revealed that her full trade name was ‘Seasafe Dandy’, and her builders were Seasafe Boats.

I felt my quest had finally been achieved, but a closer inspection revealed she was not identical to Tony’s. One thing this search has revealed is that there are a vast number of different sailing vessels, most of which can be identified by their sail insignias.

Tony will be sending me more photos of his boat and of the sail insignia, which I shall publish here in due course. I have a feeling that the sail may have come from another boat. However, feelings cannot be relied upon. I thought the letters ‘SK’ could have stood for Sea King, but in fact Sea Kings were built not far from where I live, and they have their own distinctive sail insignia.

If you can put a name to the class of yacht shown in the photo, both Tony and I shall be grateful.

Westerly Centaur

On 22nd September 2010 I posted an article about Westerly Centaurs. Here’s a link to it:

Centaurs have become enduring classic yachts since the last production boat in 1984. They appeal to many yachtsmen because of being practical and user friendly with their standing headroom and caravan-like accommodation suitable for a mum and dad with a couple of kids.

There are currently 4 Westerly Centaurs on Ebay.co.uk ranging from £6,000 to £8,995, the cheapest being auctioned, while the others are featured in the ‘Classified Ads’. That gives a pretty good idea of the current price for a Centaur. Four years ago you would be fortunate to find a good one under £10,000.

*Yacthworld.com are currently advertising 15 Centaurs for sale in the UK.

Sailboats, Yachts, Dinghies, Trimarans and Catamarans at Bill’s Log

The majority of readers of this blog have an interest in small sailing craft; therefore I have made a separate page of links to my Cruising Logs. Here is a link to that page: http://bills-log.blogspot.co.uk/p/cruising-logs.html

In addition to my Cruising Logs I have added a page of links to articles I’ve written featuring Small Sailboats. Here’s the link: http://bills-log.blogspot.co.uk/p/small-sailboats-here-are-links-to.html

I suggest you add both links to your list of favourites or bookmarks so that you can revisit them for further reading.

If you find any errors or articles that could be added, please get back to me via the Comments section on the Home Page.

I wish you happy reading.

Foxcub 18

I stumbled across this Foxcub 18 when walking at Leigh-on-Sea yesterday. A friend of mine had one years ago, not long after I became a member of the Up River Yacht Club at Hullbridge. The time of his ownership was about 1975. I remember that she was fast, and did well in handicap racing on the River Crouch between Hullbridge and Burnham. Perhaps credit should be given to the owner, because he went on to twice win the Burnham Week Local Handicap Trophy, but with a twin keel Pegasus 700.

The original Cub was built by Copeland Boats of Ventnor, Isle of Wight. She came in three versions: fin keel, twin keel and lifting keel. I’m not sure if Uffa Fox actually designed the Foxcub 18, but I believe her hull was based on one of his 18 foot dinghies. The early boats had a lower cabin structure than later ones. Over 650 were built before the moulds were transferred to Dublin in 1983.

Features I like about this boat are her flared bow for keeping her dry when working to windward; her masthead furling Genoa which is good for windward sailing and for ease of reefing;  her high coaming for keeping water out and for crew comfort and security; her companionway above the bridge deck to make her less vulnerable to the cabin being flooded in rough water conditions; her skeg to protect the transom hung rudder, and her  fairly wide transom for keeping her stable when on the run and to help the boat to plane. The spinnaker is useful for racing.

The fin keel version has a draught of 3.25 metres which could present problems if she were to be stranded and dry out, but this particular boat has twin keels, and with her skeg, she should dry out OK, provided enough weight is aft of the keels to prevent her bow falling forward.

‘Hooge Springer’- A Dutch Style Steel Yacht

Here are photos of a steel Dutch style yacht. The Dutch have a good reputation for building quality steel yachts: round bilge, chined and multi-chined.  As her name is ‘Hooge Springer’, I would suggest she may have been built in the locality of Breskens, Netherlands.

I saw her today at Leigh-on-Sea, moored to the public quay. From appearances I believe someone is living aboard her. The amount of gear accumulated on her decks and in her cockpit would indicate this to be the case. The charge for berthing there is £9.00 a day, which works out at £63.00 a week. This is considerably less than a pontoon mooring at nearby Leigh Marina, where the charge for a 34’ boat would amount to £173.74!

Walking at Heybridge

Walking has always been a pleasurable activity for me. As a youngster I loved to roam the Somerset countryside. From the bottom of my garden to the Blackdown Hills, there was a magical terrain for adventure, consisting of fields, hedges, orchards, and leafy lanes; copses, brooks, secret footpaths and narrow roads.

Essex has a different flavour, but there are many places for walking - none better for a man who loves boats, than Heybridge. Many times I have spoken of its charm. However, like other places, because of their attraction and popularity, unwanted changes are forced upon them.

One of my favourite walks used to be beside the canal from Heybridge Basin along the footpath towards a bridge over the canal located at the north end of Hall Lake. From there I would continue around the Lake until arriving back where I started.

Fairly recently, the footpath beside the canal was tarmacked, and a wooden hut was erected on the bank overlooking the canal adjacent to the car park. In the summer months this ugly structure, complete with decking and parasols, was transformed into a café. By it there is a jetty for rowing boats available for hire. Reeds beside the canal have grown so high in many places they prevent one from seeing moored boats and waterfowl.

The walk is still worth doing, but I can’t say it remains a favourite.
From the footpath on  the western side of Hall Lake there are open views across muddy stretches of the tidal Blackwater towards picturesque Maldon. For twitchers there’s unrivalled viewing in the opposite direction towards birdlife on the Lake.

Recently while walking at Heybridge, I could not fail to notice rotting wrecks on the banks of the Blackwater and decaying boats moored in the Canal. They reminded me of the transient nature of life which is glorious when one is young and healthy, but not so glorious when one is old, and atrophy sets in. Fortunately, not all is lost, for there is another more glorious life after death for those who believe in and trust Jesus.

Proverbs 3:5 ‘Trust in the LORD with all you heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.’

Van de Stadt Pioneer 9

In August 2012 I wrote a short article* about a Van de Stadt Pioneer 9 I saw on the River Crouch at Fambridge. Later, I discovered she was for sale for £5,500. I believe that same yacht is the one featured in these photos showing her ashore at Burnham Yacht Harbour last week. I image she was sold, and that her new owner is preparing her below the waterline for repainting and antifouling. He’s made a brilliant job of polishing the propeller, but there’s a lot more work on the hull to make it smooth before applying the appropriate paints.

Having owned ‘Aziz’** a Pioneer 9, I have an empathy for what is being done to ‘Nomis’, for that is her name. She is a genuine early, classic fibreglass yacht built in the 1970s worthy of being cherished.

I would be interested to know why she was named, ‘Nomis’, which is Simon spelled backwards.

Caprice 19 - A Robert Tucker Pocket Cruiser

I recently came across this Robert Tucker Caprice 19 at Walton-on-the Naze. She looks like a Mark V version.

Searching online for information about Caprice 19s, I arrived at the conclusion that there aren’t many for sale - not that I want one today, although in the past I was interested, and I looked at a Mark 1 with a veiw to becoming her owner. It transpired that she was not entirely sound and I didn't feel like doing the work required to put her right.

There are different versions of the yacht, but the Caprice ‘Shrimpy’, made famous by Shane Acton who sailed her around the world, was a Mark 1. (See first link below for more information.)

Cornish Crabber 22 – Part 2

Here are photos of a beautiful Cornish Crabber for sale at Burnham Yacht Harbour. I featured a similar one at the same location last January*.

Crabber 22 yachts are very sturdily built and they are equipped with top quality fittings. Unlike many fibreglass yachts they have bags of character derived from traditional working boats. The hull has firm bilges, an upright stem, a moderately fine underwater entry, sweetly flowing lines to an angled, transversely curved transom above a deep skeg for directional stability. The skeg provides a strong mounting for the base of the rudder and protects the hull when the boat takes to the ground.  Her gaff cutter rig with canting bowsprit and furling foresails makes for easy handling. This particular boat comes with a road trailer, and in 2013 she was fitted with a Yanmar 2YM15 diesel engine. Unusually she has a pushpit, stanchions and guard wires.

The asking price is £33,950, which is £19,500 more than the one for sale in January, but the latter did not have a road trailer. A new Crabber 22 will set you back £67,000!
